 EXCERPT of the WEEK from

                                            Simulation

Jez takes my palm into his hand, and he feels soft. Outside the thick marble wall, we can see sparks from the electrical fence still protecting us, and I still feel safe to a degree here, but Jez pulls me forward, where I know the electrical fence will end, and then I really will have no protection from the CR illness. I can’t shake the idea that I might just come back sick, or worse…dead, despite what Jez says.
“You don’t have to be afraid,” Jez assures, and walks with me as we shift forward. The grass progressively grows shorter until we reach the end of it.
I look up a couple inches to glance into Jez’s eyes. “Yes, I do,” I say about the unknown, about what Papa will do if he finds out I’ve been this close to the wall, to a Giver. But I’ve already come this far.
“Are you ready? It will be like nothing you imagined,” Jez says.

WIN a FREE eBook of Simulation. Comment on the cover on this blog, honestly. Include your eMail!!  Should I change it? Is the image too well know? Does it say SciFi romance dystopia in a post-apocalyptic world? What should I do differently? TY!

REVIEW of the WEEK:

I was involved in a book giveaway with this author and wanted to check out her book. Loved it. Loved it so much, I read books 2 and 3 as well. I have Kindle Unlimited so that is easy for me. I love KU so I can skim, return, or read in depth at my leisure.

I have to say this kept me on my toes and while I could predict some thing, overall I thought this was a great original concept with some good writing. It was definitely fun! So, if you are looking for something with a bit of thrills, mystery, action, set in a dystopia world that is not all gloom and doom, check this out.

EXCERPT of the week from Animal Graph:

Still, a different kind of beast lurks a few meters from Adan to the left. I whisper in a shout. “Over there!” Suddenly, it jumps toward us and backward, just to repeat this pattern again. Startled, Ostir flips around and watches intensely, her eyes squinting in the darkness. My vision zeros in on the miniature, brave creature with tiny pointed teeth and short, sharp claws. The creature reminds me of a howler monkey; the reverberating screech is almost deafening, and makes me tense as if I’m surrounded by the worst kind of foe, something mythical. But this animal has no hair or fur, and its eyes—oh, God, its incredible eyes are too large to miss. Like boulders on clay, the Burned howler stares at me, straight into me, as if it can read my Graph.

REVIEW OF EMERGE by Heather Sunseri

So, I read a lot of books because I have a Kindle Unlimited subscription to Kindle. Many books I end up swimming or lose interest in a quarter of the way through, but I enjoy the service to give me a taste of what's out there.

I came across EMERGE by Heather Sunseri and I thought it would be the typical post-apocalyptic story, about yet another virus. Well, it is about a virus, but the story is good so I actually read it.

Told from two point of view, the main character Cricket, or Christina, is easy to like and tough which is a relief from the damsel in distress we get even in this genre. She lives on the outside.

West lives on the inside, and they are connected by a shared past. The story has a touch of romance, but is mostly about the contrast between these two people, their lives and the lives of those from the outside vs the inside.

(I have this theme in my book Simulation as well)

The story is written well and the plot adds a bit of a mystery, while also having the element of grit and apocalypse. I do like it and wanted to recommend it to readers who are looking for something else in the post-apocalyptic genre.

I give it 4 1/2 stars, out of 5.

FINAL WORDS:

I hope you enjoyed my first Blog Newsletter, and please keep reading as there are always book giveaways, swag, early reviews/reads, beta-reading opportunities and the chance to find new authors and new books!

Next Blog Newsletter will be: Nov. 18th, on Sunday, where I will share two new book trailers with you for Animal Graph and Electric Gardens.

 See you then!

Bye!

Animal Graph Review

https://tometender.blogspot.com/2017/08/animal-graph-by-mblack.html?showComment=1503344184848#c4447754327782829600

Animal Graph by M.Black

It isn’t enough that the world as we know it has ended after a nuclear war. Now the beauty of the Amazon Jungle has become part of a heinous nightmare where prisoners, incarcerated for simply trying to survive in a world where the masses are yoked to their leaders become lab rats for horrendous experiments.

Human prisoners have become the hosts for animal cell and neural tissue grafting. These humans have also been connected by brain waves to chosen animals. When two prisoners escape into the jungle, their new abilities come to life in an effort to escape detection and find freedom. Jin and Adan must combine their talents and learn to trust one another in a desperate quest to survive in a world gone mad.

M.Black’s ANIMAL GRAPH is more than a dystopian tale from the creative genius of this author’s mind. It raises the question of survival of the fittest, of living in harmony and questioning what if the odds are artificially stacked against these new creations. As new senses come online, new abilities are discovered and evil is on their heels, will they learn that only the strong will survive, but will they find who the strong really are?

A thought-provoking read, told quickly and in a manner that leaves so much open for discovery. These characters were just beginning to flower as this tale ended.

I received this copy from Eloquent Enraptures Publishing.

Animal Graph review!

My review

Jin escapes from a prison where she was experimented on to have animal cells and neural tissue grafted into her.  This gives her a range of   unique abilities including a connection by brain waves to a chosen animal.  She has to try and survive out in the Amazonian jungle of an eradicated world whilst being tracked by Graft Soldiers.  The book follows her escape as she learns more about the world and herself.
I don’t read many YA books as I find the style a bit too simplistic for my normal tastes but I was drawn to this one by the fun premise of animal grafting.  Before getting the book I read a review that said it was like the Hunger Games meets X-men and I wholeheartedly agree with this description. Its fun escapism fantasy. The characters have extraordinary abilities from their animal Graphs but these also come with weaknesses. Its a really good balance. The science in the book such as the grafting with animals is glossed over but this just adds to the easy read factor along with the simplistic language used.  The science wasn’t detailed enough for me but I still really enjoyed the book and think it works well for teen fiction.  There’s lots of fun fight scenes where the characters use their awesome abilities with interesting effects.  The book ends mid-air which to me left it feeling very unfinished. I like most ends tied up in a story and I felt that this was just setting up for a sequel.
The main character Jin is likeable and I got behind her, egging her on to defeat the next obstacle in her escape. Adan fits into the stero-typical dreamy supporting character/love interest for the heroine to fall for that I’ve seen previously in young adult books.
A really fun, quick and easy read but if you want to know how things end you would also need to read the next book in the series.
I’d recommend if you like: young adult fiction, super-hero abilities, eco-sci-fi, young adult dystopia.

Reviewing

I have been extremely busy with writing two scripts for producers, and training for a new job to help the hard of hearing and deaf, and turning extra hours, so I have been swamped this month. But I promise to resume newsletters and reviews, bimonthly, every Sunday, starting in AUGUST.

Until then, enjoy my own reads!

Sunday Review of THE COLONY by Kathleen Groger

I read so many books, about one per week, with Kindle Unlimited, and so I thought I should be posting my reviews on my blog for my followers and other bloggers to see. So, this is the first of my Sunday weekly reviews to come.

This week's review is of THE COLONY.

The Good:
I loved the beginning. I really like how the author develops the main two characters. I really like how we think at first this is going to be like many other dystopian stories, with some virus that spreads and kills humanity and the rest have to figure out how to live, but turns out the storyline is different. I very much enjoyed the "rules" the main character has on her arm, and the almost non-stop action scenes, as well as the undertone of romance between the two main characters that never turns into a full-blown sex scene. I really enjoyed the big reveal and the connection to the oil, and to the metal bugs. I was not expecting it. The editing, for a self-published book, is decent.

I am interested enough to order book two on Kindle Unlimited. Fortunately for me, I have that option with KU which is great because if I don't like something I can easily return it and check out another book in seconds.

The Bad:
While I enjoyed the descriptions at first of our main heroine having lemon sized lumps in her throat, and then all kinds of variations in her throat as tension builds, I think midway through the book the descriptions becomes overdone and the author should have used other descriptors to reveal the stress in the main character. I felt the first half of the book was strong and the second half was mediocre. Not to say it was not good, it just became more of the same.

I felt it very improbable that the "third" character toward the end and inside the army base would not have been behind bars, and would have been able to roam around at will, enabling her to free our main heroine. That scenario really should have been thought out better and should have been harder. I thought some things were obvious, like when we learn our main characters are left handed. I feel like the characters should have been able to connect the dots faster than they did, but they are only teenagers so maybe I'm expecting too much from them. There are other points which seem to be repeated, and yet no dots are connected. It made me feel the characters are not so smart. I thought there were too many action scenes by the middle point, and midway through the book I wish there were other scenes, perhaps diving deeper into the characters as they talk on a sofa, or over grass. Maybe, an awkward kissing scene? Or even an emotional breakdown scene.

All in all, this was a decent story. At first I'd say about a B+, and with the reveals, a strong B+, but by the end, I'd have to go with a B-.

If you enjoy dystopia, particularly YA dystopia, with a twist you may not see coming, then I recommend THE COLONY by KATHLEEN GROGER.
